This is our first of many installations on the lingo in the would of the nerds. Whether you are trying to understand it yourself or trying to get your friends and family to understand more, here’s a guide for you.
Shipping: V. A term used to describe fan fictions that take previously created characters and put them as a pair. It usually refers to romantic relationships, but it can refer platonic ones as well. (Just think of “shipping” as short for “relation-SHIP”.)
Most people do this without realizing it remember the show Friends where everyone had a ship of any combination of the main 6 characters, I.E. Ross and Rachel, Monica and Joey, Chandler and Phoebe, Joey and Chandler. Really whomever you thought would be great together.
Fandom: V. The community that surrounds a tv show/movie/book etc. Fanfiction writers, artists, poets, and cosplayers are all members of that fandom. Fandoms often consist of message boards, livejournal communities, and people.
If you have ever gotten so into anything where the cliffhanger drives you crazy and you start developing theories on where it might go and just get so angry that you have to wait to see what happens? Or have you ever binged watch a show on Netflix just to find yourself become a bigger fan of it as the seasons go by? If the answer is yes you belong to a fandom of that source of entertainment and there is probably a name for you. I.E. Whovians ( Doctor Who).
Muggle: n. Originating from the Harry Potter books by JK Rowling,
A non magical person
If you can’t fly a broom, make water into wine, or turn the lights on without touching the switch and without a clapper, you are a muggle. Now just because you are without magic doesn’t mean you’re less of a person, it just means you have to knit your sweaters yourself and go around in your not flying cars like the rest of us.
